5 Supercool Birmingham Festivals
Tuesday February 21, 2017
We adore festivals here in Birmingham: some are family friendly, some are for foodies and some are pretty darn niche. We’d like to flag some of the more quirky festivals coming up over the next few months. Between April and July, Birmingham will offer you Flatpack (film), The Independent Birmingham Festival (all-round indie fabulousness), Supersonic (edgy music) and BE Fest (innovative performing arts). Dare to be different and give one or more a try.
1) Flatpack Film Fest 4th-9th April
Flatpack calls itself a “week-long celebration of cinematic joy and audio-visual delights” and we don’t think that we can better that, frankly. The full programme launches in early March, but selected highlights have been released.
2) Swingamajig April 30th
Party like it’s 1929! Swingamajig is dedicated to Electro Swing, Gypsy Folk and vintage mayhem. This unique festival takes the sounds and styles of the 1920′s and gives them a contemporary twist. The main Swingamajig action takes place in a Big Top, which pleases us greatly. Check out live music, DJs, swing dancers, acrobats and vintage cinema.

3) Independent Birmingham Festival 13th May
A new festival kid on the Birmingham block. This one-day festival strikes us an excellent way to discover the coolest food, drinks, design and art in Birmingham. Only businesses covered the by the Independent Birmingham card can trade at this new event, which should ensure great quality.
4) Supersonic Festival 16th-18th June
Into adventurous music? Supersonic is definitely the festival for you. 2017’s line-up includes Jenny Hval, Colin Stetson and Princess Nokia. Supersonic will – rather fabulously – kick off this year in Birmingham’s Grade I Listed Town Hall with a performance on the venue’s pipe organ by Swedish musician Anna Von Hausswolff.
5) BE Fest 4th-8th July
Be Fest is proudly unconventional. The 2017 programme is yet to be confirmed, but you are guaranteed an innovative programme of theatre, dance, comedy, circus, music, visual and performing arts. Watch highlights of 2015 here to get a taste of what to expect.
