Romantic city break in Birmingham
Saturday August 1, 2015
Looking for a killer combination of cool things to do, great places to eat out, and a stylish place to spend time together? Birmingham is the UK's second city and a vibrant, quirky place. Read on for just a few of our favourite things to do for two.
Birmingham has a thriving independent food scene and more Michelin starred restaurants than any other UK city outside London. Ask our Guest Relations team to recommend the hottest places to eat in the city (such as the seriously funky Digbeth Dining Club) or take a look online at Dine Birmingham to get your finger on the foodie pulse of the city.
Whatever type of music you are passionate about, you'll find somewhere wonderful to enjoy it live in Birmingham. Catch a huge act such as Madonna at the Barclaycard Arena or choose an intimate venue such as the Jam House, co-founded by Mr Jools Holland.
The Electric - Britain's oldest working cinema - is an independent gem with great scheduling and they'll bring food and drinks to your VIP sofa. The perfect date for a pair of cineasts.
If contemporary art is your thing, 2015 is a great time to visit Birmingham's Ikon gallery as it is exhibiting key British artists from its five decade history. Make time to pop into the excellent Cafe Opus at Ikon if you can.
The new Library of Birmingham is a fascinating place to explore together (especially if you share a passion for architecture and design as well as literature). This wonderful library is full of surprises. For instance, on top of this ultra-modern building you'll find the Shakespeare Memorial Room - created in 1882 - in all its Elizabethan-style splendour.
Popping the question? Birmingham produces around 40% of the jewellery made in the UK and it does it in style. The city's characterful Jewellery Quarter is home to hundreds of jewellery and craft businesses and many of them occupy Listed buildings. In fact, with plenty of great places to eat and drink, this national treasure (as English Heritage describes it) is well worth a visit whether you're on the look out for a ring or not.
