Sunday July 24, 2016
Here are 9 cool things to do in Birmingham with kids. Some of them are cool and free!
1. Walk Like An Egyptian
Tick off culture on your 'Things To Do in Birmingham with Kids' list for free by heading for BMAG. BMAG (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) has tonnes to offer such as Ancient Egyptian mummies and the Anglo-saxon Staffordshire Hoard. BMAG holds regular events for kids such as Pokemon Go hunts and weekend art sessions. A new Mini museum opened in 2016 within BMAG especially for under 5s.
2. Get S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G
Shopping obsessed teens or tweens on your hands? Shopping is huge in Birmingham! Whatever tribe your kids belong to, they’ll have lots of choice from high-street to vintage. Check out the Shopping in Birmingham website for the full breakdown.
3. BECOME EGGHEADS
A visit to Thinktank is definitely one of our favourite things to do in Birmingham with kids under 10. This science museum is a wonderful place to persuade your kids that learning can be fun. Check out the planetarium, the science garden and the Spitfire Gallery.
4. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM
If your family love to watch sport together, then you’ll be spoilt for choice in Birmingham.
- Edgbaston Cricket Club hosts Test matches, county championships, Natwest T20 Blasts and more.
- If you enjoy athletics, you can see top sportspeople at the NIA and the Alexander Stadium.
- Anyone for tennis? Birmingham hosts the Aegon Classic tennis tournament every year and you can catch world-class female tennis players playing on grass.
- Birmingham has been the place to see the All England Badminton Championships for more than 100 years.
- Villa and City are Brum’s two biggest football clubs. They both offer stadium tours, which could be a fun way to spend an afternoon for footie fans.

5. BE THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINED
Birmingham’s biggest theatre – the Birmingham Hippodrome - sells more tickets than any other theatre in the UK (take that, London’s West End!). The Hippodrome is an amazing place to see a show and they’re also famed for big name pantos. Birmingham Rep hosts smaller scale more intimate shows and has an great reputation for family productions.
6. GET FUNKY
The Custard Factory in Digbeth is a hub for creative businesses and a great place to head for if your family want something a bit different. It’s a great place to get hold of cool t-shirts and art.
7. EAT CHOCOLATE!
Cadbury World is one of the best known things to do in Birmingham with kids and it’s certainly a memorable day out that most children (and grown ups!) will love. On a more modest scale, Chouchoute Chocolaterie in the city’s Great Western Arcade is the place to go if you if you need some delicious chocolate in central Brum.
8. EMBRACE YOUR INNER GOTH
Take a trip to the Coffin Works in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter. Newman Brothers produced the fittings for the funerals of Winston Churchill and the Queens Mum. The factory closed a few decades ago but the interior was mothballed and it has now been transformed into a quirky museum.
9. HEAD FOR THE PICTURES
The Electric cinema is a funky little gem hidden away behind New Street station. The Electric holds unique mini film festivals every year such as Shock and Gore. Definitely the place to head for if your family rates classic or art-house movies.
