Celebrating ten years at Rotunda through arts & culture
Staying Cool is celebrating a decade at the Rotunda with ten unique arts and culture events - Creative Heights - between now and February 2019. The programme will feature ground-breaking music, art, food, performance and cinema experiences in our dramatic penthouse apartment.
We like to be both creative and innovative, plus we’re a big supporter of the creative industries locally, so bringing Birmingham’s talent to the top of our iconic skyscraper made perfect sense.
Launch event with artist Amrit Singh
24th May 2018
The first event takes place on 24th May with the creation of an original piece of art by Birmingham artist Amrit Singh. Amrit will use one of our huge penthouse windows as his canvas to capture the cultural vibrancy of the city. He’ll also broadcast a time-lapse video, so that people all over the world will be able to see how his artwork is created from the first stroke of the brush to the last. Amrit Singh is a multi-disciplined award-winning creative director, artist, content creator, live streamer and inspirational public speaker. One of today’s most inspired artists, Amrit creates intricate ink art under the InkANIMA brand and has exhibited his artwork multiple times in San Francisco, London and Birmingham. We're very excited to be welcoming Amrit back to Rotunda for our first event in this exciting series.
Private dining with Alex Claridge
21st June 2018
Our second event is a culinary treat from Birmingham’s own genius-chef and owner of The Wilderness - Alex Claridge. Following a successful run of private dining experiences in our top floor penthouses during early 2018, Alex and his team are back to offer a dining experience like no other for just ten lucky attendees. Our ten competition winners will enjoy one of Alex’s brilliantly creative menus against the backdrop of the cityscape on one of the longest nights of the year on 21st June. The competition is now live and closes on the 15th June. Here's how to enter.
High Rise screening with Electric Cinema
2nd August 2018
Then on 2nd August, Birmingham’s independent Electric cinema will transform a 20th-floor penthouse into an exclusive venue for a screening of (former Staying Cool guest) director Ben Wheatley’s cult movie High Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston. The pop-up cinema will also be a highlight of the Electric’s annual Shock and Gore festival, which programmes a number of special screenings and events all year round. More details coming soon.
Columbo with Silver Screen Suppers
16th September 2018
A kitsch Columbo-themed evening with regular guest, Jenny Hammerton of Silver Screen Suppers, where attendees will enjoy food and drink loved by the famous TV sleuth aka actor Peter Falk. Jenny hosts regular Silver Screen Sunday events making movie related grand feasts for her guests accompanied by a classic from the big screen. A keen blogger and author, Jenny has published a number of star themed cookbooks including "Cooking with Columbo: Suppers With The Shambling Sleuth" and "Cooking with Joan Crawford: Recipes from the kitchen of Hollywood's greatest star". With Rotunda and Lieutenant Columbo both originating in the swinging sixties, we thought a salute to the Golden Globe Award winning detective was quite fitting. All of the money raised from tickets will be donated to local charity LoveBrum. Book your place here.
Songs in the Sky with Songwall
18 October 2018
Showcasing local musical talent from in and around Birmingham. Songwall Founded by singer/songwriter (and good friend of Staying Cool) Brendan Poynton, Songwall is both an online and live platform showcasing original songs by unsigned artists with a fair trade music philosophy at its heart.
The event on October 18th costs £15.00 and will feature Philippa Zawe and Zee Khattack. Use the links to hear their music.
Birmingham Children's Hospital Christmas Cracker
2nd December 2018
Santa Claus is coming to town! We've teamed up with Birmingham Children's Hospital Charity to host a very special afternoon of activities for BCH's patients, their families and the fundraisers who give their support all year round. The event will host lots of festive activities including festive card making, gingerbread decorating and even a visit from the jolly old fellow in red. We'll be raising money leading up to the event as part of the charity's Moment's of Magic appeal. We can't wait to welcome our guests to the Creative Heights event of the festive season, we just need to work out where to park the reindeer.
2019 Writer in Residence
As our Creative Heights programme continues into 2019, we are very excited to welcome Birmingham's Poet Laureate - Richard O’Brien who teaches at the Shakespeare Institute and is based in the Jewellery Quarter - to Rotunda as our 2019 Writer in Residence. Richard will be staying with us for a week during January in one of our Clubman apartments with plenty of room to work and views across the city to inspire him. We're proud to be supporting Writing West Midlands through this residency.
Textile Design with Birmingham City University
25 March 2019
Staying Cool is working in partnership with the Textile Design Department at Birmingham City University (BCU) to develop a new tea towel and tote bag for guests at Rotunda. Students can work in groups or on their own. The new products will launch in July this year following the briefing event on 25 March 2019.
Rotunda Grind with Quarter Horse Coffee
12th April 2019
Rotunda Grind brought together a coffee masterclass from local specialist roasters - Quarter Horse Coffee and outstanding the city views from the stylish surroundings of our 20th-floor penthouse. Attendees were given the opportunity to start their day by mastering the art of home brewing coffee with a class led by one of Quarter Horse's specialist roasters. The event also included an in-depth coffee tasting experience, a selection of breakfast treats and the opportunity to network in one of the cities most unique event spaces.
