Birmingham Christmas Market
What is Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market?
With over 120 stalls, Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market is the largest authentic Christmas market outside Germany and Austria. Here at Staying Cool, we see the day that the market opens as the start of our Christmas season. Outside our Rotunda HQ, the air is filled with the scent of temptations such as glühwein (mulled wine), roast almonds, hot chocolate, weissbeer and bratwurst.

What’s the best way to travel there?
Birmingham city centre is always busy and especially so in the run up to Christmas. There is plenty of parking available (the Bullring car parks are convenient), but it’s probably best to let the train take the strain. The market is just a couple of minutes’ walk from two Birmingham train stations - New Street and Moor Street.
What can I get to eat and drink there?
The market is festive foodie heaven. Sit outside (well wrapped up) and enjoy delights such as pretzels, bratwursts, schnitzels and roast almonds. The traditional drinks on offer include glühwein (often in very kitsch mugs!), weissbeer and warming hot chocolate.
Is the market good for Christmas shopping?
Yes, and it’s a lovely way to shop. You can buy beautiful gifts which are otherwise hard to get hold of in the UK. The Germans ‘do’ Christmas very well and the stallholders offer handcrafted items such as wooden decorations, jewellery, Christmas tree baubles, crystal lamps, leatherwork, decorated festive biscuits and traditional wooden toys.
The Christmas market is right in the heart of Birmingham city centre, so you could easily combine your visit with a trip to the huge Bullring shopping centre, funky Grand Central or the classy Mailbox.
Is there any other entertainment on offer?
A visit to the big wheel and ice rink has become an integral part of a trip to Birmingham Christmas market for many people. The wheel looks very beautiful and makes for a great photo. This year, the big wheel and ice rink are moving from their usual location at Centenary Square (which is being redeveloped) to Eastside Park, just down the hill from our apartments.
There’s also free entertainment on at the bandstand in Victoria Square. The events schedule can be seen on line.
What are the quietest times to visit the Birmingham Christmas market?
Friday and Saturday evenings are always peak times. Early evenings can also be busy as Brummies love to stop off on their way home from work. There’s a lovely, buzzy atmosphere but if you’d prefer a quieter experience then visit outside these peak hours.
Is there wheelchair access to the market?
The market runs along Birmingham’s New Street and around Victoria Square. The whole market can be covered using a step-free route.
